Professor Gordon Slethaug’s lecture examines the evolution of American painting through the lens of mobility, tracing its deep connection to industrial progress and transportation infrastructure from the early nineteenth century to the postmodern period. It begins with the rise of American landscape painting shaped by Romanticism and Transcendentalism, which celebrated natural scenery while expressing skepticism toward industrial technology. As national infrastructure expanded and westward movement unfolded, artistic representations of mobility gradually evolved. Following the Civil War, realist and Impressionist works turned to modern urban mobility and mechanical transportation, reflecting changing ideas of progress. Later, artists explored trains, bridges, automobiles, highways, and urban transit, shifting from celebration to critical reflection on technology and modern life. The lecture reveals how mobility has been a central, defining theme in American art, illuminating cultural attitudes toward nature, industry, and modernity, and offering a unique perspective on the nation’s social and artistic transformation.

主讲人简介：

Professor Gordon Slethaug is a distinguished scholar, author and professor with research focuses in contemporary American literature, film, cultural studies, chaos theory, international education and globalization. He earned his BA from Pacific Lutheran University and his MA and PhD in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, completing his doctoral dissertation on Thoreau in 1968.

He has built a longstanding international academic career across North America, Asia and Europe. He served as Head of the English Department and Associate Dean of Graduate Programs in Arts at the University of Waterloo, and currently works there as an adjunct professor. He was Director of American Studies and Lingnan Professor at the University of Hong Kong, where he remains an Honorary Professor. He also held a Senior Fulbright Professorship and taught at the University of Southern Denmark. Supported by a Lingnan Foundation grant, he led crosscultural teamteaching and American studies collaboration between the University of Hong Kong and Sun Yatsen University. A highly productive academic, Slethaug has published seven books, over 65 articles and numerous book chapters. His major works include Beautiful Chaos, Adaptation Theory and Criticism, Hit the Road, Jack, and Teaching Abroad. He has received major honors including a Senior Fulbright Professorship and the University of Hong Kong Outstanding Teacher Award. His research and teaching integrate global experiences to explore cultural exchange, identity, literary adaptation and crosscultural pedagogy.
